Travel Insurance Budget Calculator

Estimate how much travel insurance should cost for your trip based on trip value, travelers and destination.

What does travel insurance cover?

  • Trip cancellation — reimburses prepaid costs if you must cancel for a covered reason.
  • Emergency medical — hospital and doctor costs while abroad.
  • Medical evacuation — transport to adequate care or home in an emergency.
  • Baggage — lost, delayed or damaged luggage.
  • Trip interruption — unused trip costs if you must return early.

How much should you budget?

Travel insurance typically costs between 4% and 10% of your total trip cost, depending on your age, destination, trip length and coverage level. Our estimate assumes a mid-range policy. For international trips, medical coverage is especially important — your home health insurance rarely covers you abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance worth it for a domestic trip?

For short, low-cost domestic trips, it may not be necessary. For expensive international travel, long trips, or if you have a health condition, it's strongly recommended.

Can I buy travel insurance after booking?

Yes, but buying within 10–14 days of your initial trip deposit often unlocks "pre-existing condition" waivers and better cancellation coverage. The earlier you buy, the better.
